Below is a sample submitted to an MSP Client
To properly propose and implement this kind of project we need to accomplish a number of tasks.
This requires delegating tasks out to complete.
Information gathering (onsite)
Identify applications hosted on-prem
Identify and document physical server assets
Identify and document physical network assets
We need client discussion/sessions to identify which applications are in use and which applications to not consider for the upgrade/migration
Categorize - identify applications that can be migrated and those that cannot be migrated.
Decide whether to continue on-prem or migrate to cloud.
With Broadcom acquisition and the changes in VMware licensing, we will have to be open to consider cloud (Azure). The currently available solutions on-prem with HCI (High Availability HA + Scalability enabled) are VMWare Cloud Foundation and Azure Stack HCI.
It is unknown at this time whether Broadcom will discontinue the VSphere basic subscription. Vsphere basic does not provide Storage HA. Without HA, once a host goes down, it will be difficult or would take time to restore a service that was running on the broken host.
Proceed to deploy
Deploy On-Premise
Deploy on Cloud (Azure)
Without considering the workload (data gathered for in-use applications and servers) below is a SAMPLE scope:
=================================================================
ON-PREMISE BASED OPTION:
Required Additional Hardware
3x PowerEdge T440 or Rackmount server (need to check onsite which server form factor is more appropriate)- need to refer to Sales team for pricing
at least 6 CPUs ie. Intel(R) Xeon(R) Silver 4210 CPU @ 2.20GHz
at least 64GB RAM
at least 2.73TB SSD (usable space on RAID 5)
Required Licenses:
VSphere - need to refer to Sales team for pricing
VSAN - need to refer to Sales team for pricing
These 2 vmware licenses also come as VSphere Essentials Kit (no info on possible EOL) or VMWare HCI Kit (need to consult vendor)
Windows Server 2022 Data Center
3x virtualization host - need to refer to Sales team for pricing
Windows Server 2022 Standard
1x File Server - need to refer to Sales team for pricing****
1x Active Directory Domain Controller (ADDS) - need to refer to Sales team for pricing
Required VMs to be created:
1x Domain Controller (prep time 1 hour)
1x File Server (prep time 1 hour)
Hardware setup and VSphere configuration (4 hours)
VSAN setup (4 hours)
Implementation time depends on delivery of hardware
Other items need to consider
- Support subscription renewals
- location to place the additional server
- electricity cost
- HVAC/Cooling
- redundant and failover/backup power options
=================================================================
CLOUD BASED OPTION (AZURE):
Required Additional Hardware - NONE
Required Licenses
1x Windows Server 2022 Standard (Active Directory DC) -need to refer to Sales team for pricing
Required Subscription
1x Azure Subscription- *need to refer to Sales team for pricing
For AVD (if needed), each user who will access must have at least Microsoft 365 Business Premium License assigned - need to refer to Sales team for pricing and info to upgrade from current Microsoft 365 Business Basic
Required VMs to be created:
1x Domain Controller (prep time 1 hour)
1x File Server (prep time from 1 hour, depends on how big the current file server is)
Azure Virtual Machines are paid monthly
2x B2s sized VMs estimated at 61 USD/month each
Required Additional configurations:
Site-to-site VPN (Sonicwall to Azure) configuration (2 hours)
Implementation time depends on how soon the Azure subscription is processed.
